The Bridge of San Luis Rey

book

In 1714, “the finest bridge in all Peru” collapses and five people plunge to their deaths. Brother Juniper, a Franciscan missionary, decides to track down their individual stories to prove that even what seem to be random misfortunes are consistent with God’s plan. That his discoveries turn out to be more complex will come as no surprise. What may surprise are the beguilements of Wilder’s teasing, ironic, beautifully written tale, unlike anything else in American fiction. [link]

I finished reading The Bridge of San Luis Rey last night. I liked it. The characters are ordinary people who make lots of mistakes and are often lonely, but you can see how they are connected to so many others and wouldn’t be lonely if they just paid attention or were less proud. It made me feel a little sad (it was pretty honest), but it was so hopeful. And the writing was fantastic.

Some parts made me laugh. A priest is trying to figure out why God would choose to have some people die and others live. He is having a hard time proving that those that died were worse than those that lived. The narrator cheekily injects:

The discrepancy between faith and the facts is greater than is generally assumed.

The book was easy and quick to read, but it’s the sort of book you can read over and over. I thought, while reading it, that it might be difficult to make into a good movie. There isn’t much action or talking, mostly just descriptions of people. Apparently, it has been made into a movie three times. I’d like to see the first two, but the most recent one was probably written with the script I was imagining: it failed miserably.

the cultural divide

Me: I do not want to live with her. She has no job and her English is poor.  I would like to live with X unless you have a serious problem with her.

Male, Chinese roommate: I will give you my decision in the morning.

My roommate would never interpret his statement as at all incorrect.  Maybe he wanted to have more time to judge X.  Maybe he felt like he didn’t have enough of a role in the decision making process and wanted to say “I still have power here.”  While this is rude by American standards and frustrating because you actually don’t know how they feel, it’s just how it works sometimes.

The real compassionate conservatives

Wyoming State Rep Dan Zwonitzer is a good and brave man. An excerpt from his speech in support of same-sex marriage:

It is wrong for one segment of society to restrict rights and freedoms from another segment of society. I believe many of you have had this conversation with your children.

And children have listened, my generation, the twenty-somethings, and those younger than I understand this message of tolerance. And in 20 years, when they take the reigns of this government and all governments, society will see this issue overturned, and people will wonder why it took so long.

My kids and grandkids will ask me, why did it take so long? And I can say, hey, I was there, I discussed these issues, and I stood up for basic rights for all people.

crinoid

Most crinoids don’t move much. If you weren’t paying attention in bio, you would probably mistake one for some sort of plant. This crinoid, however, crawls across the ocean floor at quite a rapid pace. It’s very strange – kind of like seeing a tree crossing the street.

Put me thru school…

You probably think I should put myself through school with work, applying for scholarships, etc. Well, I’ve got 3 well paying jobs and 1 not so well paying job,* a hefty fellowship, a scholarship worth a few hundred, a grant worth a few thousand, and I’ve still only got 1/2 of my cost of of attendance** covered. I’m going to school part time next semester and I’m spending the next two weeks of my life writing essays for still more scholarship applications (and going to work, of course).***

Sad, right? Tugging at your heartstrings? Desperate to help me go to school full time in the spring? I have a solution!

empress

If you hate the drawings (don’t tell me about it, please), you can buy me presents to encourage me (or at least distract me from the ginormous bill I receive from NAU every semester).

*Actually the job I posted about yesterday. I keep it for the stress relief. Plus the part where I get to talk to old ladies.

**I’m out of state because living where it rains gives me migraines. It rains a lot in NC, not so much in AZ. Out of state students pay approximately 10 gazillion dollars in tuition.

***Wow! My summer vacation sounds just like winter break! I bet I’m going to have so much fun!!!

****Actually some number under 50.
