ginger carrots

carrots

I really love orange foods, especially carrots. Usually I eat them raw, but we’ve been getting them every week for a month through csa and even I can get sick of raw carrots every day.

This recipe, adapted from the csa newsletter, is a pretty awesome (and easy! and vegan!) way to eat carrots.

Ginger Carrots

Slice some carrots and ginger up. Toss the ginger in a pan with some hot sesame oil for a minute and add the carrots. Saute for 3 minutes. Add more ginger and some salt. Then cover the pan and shake everything around.

learning to like beets

I used to hate beets (except in barszcz).

This wasn’t a real problem in my life until we started getting them nearly every week through csa. I’d eat the leaves with pierogies and find someone to give the beets. Or even throw them out.

But one of my housemates loves beets and started cooking them for me. The first time, I was hard pressed to chew and swallow the small bite I’d taken. The second time, I actually enjoyed the bite I took. And yesterday, I ate so many my pee turned magenta.

Moral of the story: beets are good even when they aren’t in barszcz.

Doing the right thing

French protesters rock my world. They actually extinguished the Olympic torch. And they did it multiple times. I think the quotes from Chinese officials are really telling:

“The torch represents the Olympic spirit, and people welcome the torch,” said Wang Hui, the spokeswoman.

“The general public is very angry at this sabotage by a few separatists,” she said. “Some people, they want to disrupt the torch relay. And this will not do any good.”

I wonder if she realizes that, unlike China, we have some semblance of freedom of the press and access to many, many media outlets. We have pictures of the protests and we can see there are more than a few of those “separatists.” A heck of a lot of us agree with those “separatists,” too.

We don’t believe rumors that practitioners of Falon Gong eat babies (unlike some of my students in China). We know their government isn’t nice to their ethnic minorities and is actively destroying both the Uyghur and Tibetan cultures. We know the Chinese government censors right and left. I wonder how much they’ll embarrass themselves before the Olympics are over?

I hope these protests have an effect on how China handles dissent.  I wish protest had more of an effect on America’s foreign policy.  Yes, China has an appalling human rights record, but we don’t have much to brag about anymore.

I <3 my housemates

This was a pretty stressful week for me.  When I get stressed, I start to notice dirt/clutter and that makes me MORE stressed.  But I’m stressed because I’m busy, so I don’t have time to clean.

This week, one of my housemates cleaned the kitchen and another of my housemates cleaned the bathroom.  Unlike some of the other people I’ve lived with, I really love my housemates right now 🙂
