Pessimism

We’ve made a great big overpopulated mess of our planet and sometimes I feel like we aren’t going to take effective action before things really fall apart.  I don’t really think I’m pessimistic, because I certainly keep trying.  Perhaps this is stupid.  May Kasahara in Haruki Murakami’s The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle says this:

I’m only sixteen … and I don’t know much about the world, but I do know one thing for sure.  If I’m pessimistic, then the adults in this world who are not pessimistic are a bunch of idiots.

But I think I’d rather be an idiot than hopeless.

Berry Go Round delay

I was planning on having the 14th Berry Go Round up today, but it was eaten by wordpress. I should have it cobbled back together by tomorrow morning, so check back soon!

Science rocks my socks

I’ve been working madly to get some data together to present at a conference in a few months and last night I wrote the last line of code, plotted the data, and just sat there for a minute. Sometimes (and by sometimes I mean all the time) science is surprising. Something I thought was sort of a continuous process is actually more of an on or off process. And while this surprise has very inconvenient timing (or maybe I should just get things done earlier…), it is going to completely change how I put this piece of my research into my fancypants model. Bonus: I think it’s going to reduce error, too.

On another note, last night I dreamed I was Siler’s sidekick and I kept thinking “OMG why does he have to make such a mess? I’m so hungry and this is going to take forever to clean up.” In real life, I am not that callous, though I am hungry all the time.

Weekly Top 5

So I’m still kind of terrified of this week and dreading the coming sleep deprivation. But I’m feeling pretty optimistic for a few reasons:

  1. I’m really struggling with some of my scholarship essays, but I have amazing and brilliant friends who are helping to shape them into something good.
  2. I have several pounds of coconut cookie dough in my refrigerator, which means that emergency cookies are readily available.
  3. I bought a pair of turquoise polka dot shoes for $20, and it’s going to be warm enough to wear them this week.
  4. It’s cloudy this morning AND I DON’T HAVE A MIGRAINE!!!!
  5. If I for some reason don’t get my abstract done this week, I can always submit it as a late-breaking poster in May.
  6. I have so much good music to listen to, how could I possibly be stressed?

Bad news, good news

I have a terrible cold and no chicken noodle soup. BUT the weather is looking gorgeous for the next few days:

While I may complain non-stop about having a cold, a stuffed up nose is much nicer than a migraine.  In other migraine news, I finally found some good barometric pressure information for the United States.  The two best cities in the country for me to live?

Honolulu and San Diego.  Expensive, but otherwise fantastic places to live.
