Sometimes I Worry

It’s going to be a long time before I get paid a reasonable amount.

If I had my way, I’d switch 90% of the DoD budge to basic research and funding of science initiatives.

That will never happen, of course. But I’ve been in the military and I know exactly how much money is wasted — not even to mention our feckless wars and other petty but disastrous adventures.

Just to cast out a ray of sunshine – I’d guess that that “average grad student stipend” probably incorporates grad students in a bunch of disciplines, and many liberal arts programs don’t pay grad students as much as the sciences (if at all). So as a science graduate student, and a smarty pants at that, you’ll probably be able to beat 21K. Plus grad school can last ~5 years, and don’t they cut off unemployment benefits after a couple of years? (not that the latter is a good thing per se).

i agree with theo, i bet you’ll beat the average. plus: hang in there, the world needs the science you’re going to produce, and badly. and the world needs scientists like you, full stop.
