Better science textbooks through history and mystery

I think more science textbooks and classes should devote space to wrong ideas and stuff we don’t know. Like Codons took forever to figure out after we got the structure of DNA down. Here are some coding schemes we thought might be real, but were total bullshit. and We figured out the genetic code, but […]

Relatively ignorant

Sometimes I scoff at people who are ignorant of things like basic science findings (especially well reported ones). Then I find myself asking very basic questions in an unfamiliar field.

What I’ve Noticed

Instead of paying for decent healthcare or public transit, our government is paying, quite literally, for more cheese. Coming out can be really, really hard.  But funny, too: “I think I’m… well, um… a bicycle.” Overcoming gender essentialism is also really, really hard.  But it’s so worth it. Cheating is a huge problem in our […]

What I’ve Noticed

Frank Fenner thinks we’ll go the way of the Easter Islanders in the next 100 years.  I disagree that humans will go extinct, but I agree that we’ve waited far too long to address energy and population issues to avoid dramatic and involuntary reduction in our population.  And it’s already happening: resource competition, exacerbated by […]

What I’ve Noticed

Mining companies like to claim that they’re bringing economic benefits, but cleanup and health costs far outweigh positive contributions to the economy. After thousands of years, we’ve finally discovered what the argonaut octopus uses its shell for – it’s essentially a ballast tank. HUGE step: we’ve synthesized life. Autism doesn’t have anything to do with […]

What I’ve Noticed: Really Long Edition

Between things like steep fines and jail time for the “crimes” of being poor and/or a person of color and being unable to get a job because of poor credit, it’s almost impossible to escape poverty in the US. Yesterday was the anniversary of Japan’s surrender in WWII. Still sucks to be a woman in […]

What I’ve Noticed

My university, like many others across the country, is facing unbelievable budget cuts (40%!!!).  They’re cutting programs and employees right and left.  What I don’t get is why they aren’t cutting athletics. “Corrective rape” of lesbians in South Africa goes unprosecuted. Incredibly bad news for women in Arizona.  Come back, Janet! Dear Famous Asshole Neurologist […]
